God is My Shepherd!

Do you ever feel like God is speaking to you? Specifically to you? Yesterday I felt as if God were wooing me, asking me to spend some time learning about who He is as the Shepherd.

It was an uncanny experience. First, in the morning I was teaching my daughter’s homeschool lesson on gentleness. One of the books for this unit is Found: Psalm 23, by Sally Lloyd Jones.

We’ve read it several times, but yesterday I was struck by how lovely the book really is. It tells the story of the 23rd Psalm from the perspective of a little lamb.

I decided to emphasize lambs a little bit more in my daughter’s lessons this week. Why not draw, paint and read about them? Something about focusing on this theme excited me. (Side note: let me know if you’re interested in a post about my homeschooling approach!)

Then later in the afternoon I came across an ad for an e-course on prophetic personalities. I normally ignore these things and move on, but I felt a tug in my spirit to sign up. So I did. I listened to the first session while I was prepping dinner and the anchor verse is from John 10 – The Good Shepherd and His Sheep.

(If you’re interested in the e-course –it’s on sale right now!)

Later in the evening, as I completed the written work for session 1, I had to read Psalm 23 and to meditate on the traits of the Shepherd and the effect of the Shepherd on His sheep.

And finally, as I was winding down for the night, I got a promotional email about a newly-released meditation about… you guessed it! Psalm 23.

Mind blown! I was shocked and excited. Clearly God is pointing me in a specific direction.

What is it that I need to learn about God’s character as my Shepherd?

And how should I, a sheep, respond to Him?

I’m going to be studying God the Shepherd all week. I’ve looked at Psalm 23 with fresh eyes so far:

The Shepherd:

  • Provides good things
  • Guides the sheep
  • Brings peace
  • Cares about the state of His sheep’s soul
  • Accompanies and leads His sheep
  • Blesses His sheep

The fruit of this relationship for His sheep:

  • Contentment
  • Restoration
  • His presence empowers us
  • He comforts us
  • We feel safe
  • Fear is eradicated
  • We are abundantly blessed
  • We thrive in spite of opposition
  • Our future is secure

Don’t you just love it when God tries to get your attention in a way that is undeniable?! I was tuned in to hear what God had to say this time, but I often tune out the gentle prodding of the Holy Spirit.

God is always speaking. The question is, are we listening?

  1. I totally agree with you when you asked, “Do you ever feel like God is speaking to you?” I’ve had similar experience when everything aligns to a specific word and it never fails, He comes on time! The important thing is, to be attentive to Gods word. We have to not only seek Him, but know when He is speaking and listen. God is speaking, we just have to lend our ear to hear Him. Loved your piece, as usual! oxoxoxoxoxox
